A series of unprecedented studio recordings.
Acclaimed composer Michael Pisaro creates works of intense beauty and focus that awaken a new understanding of time, silence, performance and community.
He's also been a long time friend and mentor of Human Ear pop experimentalists John Maus, Julia Holter, Jason Grier and Janet Kim. His recent Tombstones series makes a nod to pop music in its exploration of voice, narrative and persona.
Human Ear is furthering the exploration by bringing Tombstones into a major multitrack recording studio, the traditional domain of factory hitmaking. We plan to release these historic sessions on limited edition vinyl and free download in Fall 2010.
These gorgeous pieces - brief, suspenseful, expansively and yet minimally wrought - have been performed live a number of times, most recently at the Dog Star Orchestra festival. (Each one is, in fact, a "sample" - either tonally or lyrically - of hits by George Harrison and J Dilla among others.)
You can get familiar with Tombstones at our online Dog Star Archive here.
