Gary Wilson is an influential experimental recordng artist from San Diego, California.
He is cited as a key fiigure in the birth of alternative music and an artstic hero by seminal musicians from Stones Throw director Peanut Butter Wolf to Beck. After meeting John Cage as a teenager, Gary Wilson began a remarkable life of avant garde experimentation, lounge jazz, decades-long exile and, finally, widespread recognition.
Following a 25 year hiatus, he saw a revival wth three new releases. The second, "Mary Had Brown Hair" (released on Stones Throw) rivalled his legendary 1977 debut for crtiical and popular reception. The third, "Lisa Wants to Talk To You," featured a mellower, home-recorded sound, and appeared on Human Ear in 2008.
Gary Wilson's fascination with John Cage came full circle in 2008 when Jason Grier opened for him by conducting a performance of Cage's "Imaginary Landscape No. 4 (for 12 Radios)" at Los Angeles' Echo. Michael Pisaro, widely considered to be the preeminent American composer workng in the tradtion of Cage participated.
